7-17-2007 My Favorite Software
I want to pay homage here to software that gets the job done for me. Most of it is open source. Asterisks indicate the source is closed, to my knowledge.
Operating System
Debian Linux - one of the many Linux distros, but this one is truly world community-based, not led by a company like Ubuntu. companies get bought and then do wacky things.
Server Software
Plone - this site, and many others I host
Trac - version control/ticket tracking for software development and document versioning. also has a nice versioned wiki
Iceweasel - web browser (freer version of Firefox)
Gnome Desktop - my user interface on my laptops/desktops, but not servers
GnomePPP - for connecting my treo to my laptop with dial-up networking
OpenOffice - office suite
Liferea - linux feed reader
netapplet - gnome network monitor
vim - for system administration/remote as well for thin client stuff
Eclipse - for programming/designing when I have a thick client
The Gimp - graphics editing
Inkscape - vector graphics
rsync - command line program to sync directories over a network securely
Evolution - email client
xChat - IRC chat client
Programming Languages
Python - my day-to-day general purpose workhorse
C - dabbling in this to have a better understanding of open source software
Palm Treo 680 Software
CallFilter* - block calls with fine grained control
Versamail* - email client that works great with IMAP
Chattermail* - email client that works even better than Versamail with IMAP and receives instant messages from IMAP server for instant notification. Much more robust and worth every penny.
PocketTunes* - plays podcasts, ringtones, etc.
QuickReader* - RSS Feed Reader/downloading podcasts to SD Card
pSSH* - secure shell client for encryption over a network
